LOOPING ENVELOPES

Loopable envelopes can be simulated using a Table.

1) select Sawtooth for an LFO waveform
2) set LFO to modify amplitude
3) make a new table for that LFO
4) add as many points in new table as you want as breakpoints in your "envelope"
-- unmodified sawtooth is basically a looping ADS envelope: attack, decay to zero sustain, repeat
-- by adding another point in the table, you can create other decay levels and slopes and rates
5) overall length of the "envelope" is determined by LFO rate (use slower rate for audible looped envelope)
6) LFO rate can be synced to tempo, therefore looped envelope also syncs to tempo
7) looped envelopes can also be set to filter cutoff/res amt, pitch, individual multisample volume, etc
8.) multiple LFOs can be assigned per patch, allowing for quite complex, repeating patterns/motifs
9) the Fusion's "alternate range" can be used to individually control custom LFO table amounts
-- aftertouch brings in hidden quick-pulsing looped envelope set to filter cutoff
-- mod wheel brings in a LFO table set as a looping pitch envelope at half-tempo
-- "random" alternate range trigger set to pan, level, filter cutoff, etc

Non 12-tone Equal Temperament

Use keytrack to set the keyboard to play in other tuning temperaments other than standard 12-tone ET.

24 TET
Source: Keytrack (2 octaves)
Destination: Pitch
Type: Additive
Amount: -12.00% (-1 octave)

Conceptually, setting keytrack so that it takes 2 played octaves to sound out 1 heard octave means that it takes 24 keyboard notes to reach that sounded octave -- 24 tone equal temperament.

CROSS-FADING MATH

After you make a MOD for cross-fading, then the multisample engine's various OSCs become available to fade in and out. The basic formula is the lowest-numbered OSC is left/zero, the next OSC is right/100, and all further OSCs are always on.

0% = OSC1
100% = OSC2

This means that if you used a square LFO wave to crossfade mod those two OSCs above, then first you'll hear OSC1 only, then OSC2 only, then OSC1, then OSC2, etc.

If you had 3 OSCs, then you'd hear this:

OSC1 on, off, on, off, on...
OSC2 off, on, off, on, off...
OSC3 on......................

For all 4 OSCs, you'd hear this:

OSC1 on, off, on, off, on...
OSC2 off, on, off, on, off...
OSC3 on......................
OSC4 on......................

If for some reason you have a 4-OSC multisample patch, but OSC1 is disable at the moment, then OSC2 becomes the lowest OSC, and so the response changes as follows:

OSC1 (off)
OSC2 on, off, on, off, on...
OSC3 off, on, off, on, off...
OSC4 on......................

And so on. Not so complex to understand, really, once you know the basics here. After that, you can get more subtle or wacky by using subtle changes, like sine LFOs or using velocity to control crossfading. Also keep in mind that a negative crossfade amount will then favor the left side, also known as the lower-numbered OSC.

One example of how to use crossfade in this manner is to have the second/higher OSC be the louder multisample, but also have its pitch detuned a few cents higher (like what happens in the real world when you play a musical instrument "harder"). If this were an ample piano multisample, for example, then playing harder would bring in the volume of the louder multisample, while at the same time slightly raising the pitch; but against the background of OSC3/4 remaining stable in pitch, this would simply increase the detuning width, like what happens on an actual piano.

Drum Machine ARP

Ok, at this stage I'm supposing no one really reads these tips anymore. So then I can hopefully secretfully document some of my more "secret ingredient" tips...

How to get more electronica stuff happening with the Fusion? Fudge around with the built-in ARPs. Take an ARP and then change its type from whatever it is into a drum machine ARP... with certain sounds, esp one-shot samples or multi-purpose sounds, this makes an otherwise uninspiring played sound into a really innovative sonic texture or line upon which to build a song idea:

ARP
/Pattern/Setup/Pattern Type.... drum machine

Haha, jesse, so there is someone reading these after all. What was I thinking, typing "secretfully"... that's not a word, lol.

Haha, Psionic. Secretfully. Any who, I do stuff with the arppegiator like that all the time. It's an easy way to get a new type of sound with little work.

Aye, Nate, I know you're aware of these tips very much. You're a natural, and trained. We can see the possibilities, see beyond what's not immediately obvious, and the musical potential. It is good to document them, though, for future reference and for others. Honestfully, it is...

I am another who follows your postings with great interest - and saving the most interesting bits.

Pretty much all of it is "most interesting".

Fusion-wise, not really --- my 6HD screen burnt out, but I still play the same old classical and classic rock pieces thru it via MIDI using my 8HD as the main controller, along with my Micron and EX5 and WSA and EX5.

My desktop PC bit the dust awhile ago, so I have a new laptop. Been busy with a new job promotion and continuing school. So nothing new but more of the same on the Fusion. Focusing on other projects for now. How is the community doing?

A little slow as far as activity, this forum has had a little more activity lately, also unfortuanetly a lot of spammers recently.
The Fusion Club forum has been almost dead lately, very unusual for that board.
Have you looked at http://hollowsun.com/ lately, steve has some new sounds up mainly for Kontakt, the VOX CONTINENTAL sounds nice.

Take Care ... Jesse

thanks for all the tips. I just resently purchased a Fusion so all this new information is highly valuable.. Thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute some cool tunes and patchs (programs) soon.
