Building a QS7 Sound on a Fusion

Postby JHayes » Wed Dec 30, 2009 1:53 am

Hi all.

I just picked up a new Fusion 8HD today. Nice.

I owned a QS7 at one time, and wrote a song using one of the sounds in it.. now I have gotten some interest in the song and need to either buy another QS7, or build the sound on the Fusion.

Is it possible on the Fusion? If I can get the parameters used on the QS7, can I sample a sound and tweek it?

The particular Performance MIX sound on the QS7: You hit a key and it plays the note, plus has an arpeggio that goes up the scale by it's self, and trails off with digital delay panning back and forth.

If anyone knows the sound i'm talking about please post up! And ideas about re-creating the sound on the Fusion would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, Great forum!

I really need some help with this!

ok, would I be correct in thinking that if I knew the patch number and exported all of the related sysex info along with the sampled sound that it can be converted to load into my Fusion?

thank you in advance 8)

I don't think the Fusion exchanges sysex info, post your question on this forum http://fusioneer.proboards.com/index.cgi? I think you may get more help.

Thank you Jesse.

all of the qsr patches were apparently made available on that same forum just before Christmas. But after down loading them to my xp laptop today (about a gig) and plugging in a usb cable my computer sees the fusion as a removable disc. lol Now I can't install them until i figure out what the usb problem is.

I posted up there about my usb problem but if you have any ideas i'd appreciate them!

ok,i'm looking at GLOBAL information on the fusion and it shows:

Device: Hard Drive
Volume Label: [Not Formatted]
Free Space: [Not Formatted]
Total Size: 38.3GB

I guess I need the OP system.. everthing must be on ROM right now?

I am not sure, Remove usb cable from the fusion, turn on the fusion and verify everything - songs mixes programs etc. Re-start your laptop then try connecting the usb cable to the fusion again. If this works you should backup the Fusion HD files on your laptop.
What version of the OS are you running? Should be 1.24

Yes re-installing the OS could help

If you don't have OS 1.24 you can get it here along with a lot of other items, manuals sounds demo's etc. http://alesis.com/contentmgr/showdetails.php/id/1150/tt/5
you will need a cf card to install the OS on the fusion

Thanks, There was nothing on the HD so I formatted it. My laptop sees it now, and I installed some sounds from the fusioneer site.

I get a lot of errors so I'll get a CF and update!

Thanks again! Jerry

Did you use the Fusion HD format utility or your laptop, always use the Fusion HD & CF format utility for the best results on the Fusion

P.S. where are you located?

I used the Fusion to format the HD. No problems there. I'm having trouble finding out whick CF card to get.. type I or II, and if a pcmcia sandisk adaptor will work because I have a couple 2 gig small sandisks I could use.

I live in So Cal.

Thanks for all your help!

I use a Sandisk Ultra II 2 Gb and it works fine, I don't think you can use anything over 2 Gb, use the Fusion to format the CF card.

I rebuilt a sound of my good old JV-880 I sold last year. Ithink it didn't become a 1:1 copy, but the sound has the feeling it had on the JV-880. I used to sample the basic waveform and then looked for all the parameters to set. Of course fine tuning was required and took the most of the time.
When you have a sysex backup of the QS7 sound you should look for an editor, e.g. Sound Quest's "Midi Quest" or something similar.

Thanks, Could a Fusion even pull off a perfect QS 7.1 mix? I might just need to buy another QS 7.1 to use... I believe it was a Keith Emerson Mix or program that may (or may not ?) have been exclusive to the 7.1

Seems a shame there is no other way to export or convert the whole mess, not just samples but ALL relevant DATA from an Alesis QS 7.1 to an Alesis Fusion.

or maybe you can but no one has done it yet I think.

The Fusion has a different engine than the QS. Different than the Micron, different than the Andromeda. The Alesis Ion and Micron shared the same engine, so you CAN trade patches between those two synths, except that the Ion doesn't have some of the same extra features that the Micron does.

Seems to me what you're looking for is a shortcut to get to that desired sound from the QS. I'm fairly certain that it can be done on the Fusion, done better and improved even, but you have to know how to get around on the Fusion, not to mention how to program and synthesize. You mentioned that you just got your Fusion, and now you are formatting it and trying to upgrade its OS. That's already a lot of work, and you haven't even begun to learn how to use the Fusion.

What you want can be done, but not quick and easily, unless you've already invested the time in learning the Fusion.

I have updated the op to 1.24 and all is well, except for the QSR samples I managed to get onto the hard drive. Some work ok, others crash during the long loading process. Since i've updated to 1.24 I may want to try and install the QSR samples again.

I may as well dive into programming the Fusion as it looks like (given the time) it can do just about anything you want.

That's a very, very good idea! The Fusion is really a very, very capable synth, much better than the QS series. I have still my QS8 here but I don't think I even used it only once last year...
